Bunk Room! So excited for all the opportunities in the space to make it a fun getaway for any and all. Our team especially wanted a place where children could be entertained without having to be on the beach or running all around the house.
Here’s the kicker though. We had only $2500 to execute this room. That’s demo, rebuild, and design. We needed a wow to pull it off. My first thought is built in games and activities along with fun paint or wallpaper for accents around the room. Not extravagant, but something well executed, safe, and fun.
This episode was tough to see back because my back went out completely and I blew up in a way that’s not typical for me. Day after day of carrying tile, flooring and all other heavy things upstairs daily, finally got to me and my back went completely out. It hurt to walk and bending was out of the question. But I was in the middle of a competition and stopping wasn’t an option.
Adding to that, I felt that my partner chose the wrong day to pick fun at me. The stress of the competition was building and so were my nerves. I had a moment that called for a break away to calm down and refocus. The patch on my back helped too.
It was a rough week all around but I’m proud that we still pulled out the win with the smallest of small budgets!
So we went for a 4 bed design with the beds parallel to each other on opposite walls of the room. I tried to fit in a canopy or fort between the beds that would drop down but Brandon and Alison thought that those could be safety issues with an adventurous child.
Ultimately I chose to paint blue stripes and a blue moon to compliment the ceiling light that was actually a sun! Brandon picked out this flush mount light that had different light color settings. It was really cool for a kids room.
I loved the nets for storage and lighting by the beds for late night reading or activities. The bookshelves and tic tac toe on the wall were a fun magnetic game that everyone could enjoy.
What’s great about the space is that it’s functional and can be built up for more activities if needed. I love it!
Secrets Revealed!
There was a plan for wallpaper on the ceiling that failed miserably. Wallpaper on the ceiling and an aching back don’t mix. Also, I have installed wallpaper before, but I had the worst time installing it on camera!
Changing the floor plan with the layout including a smaller window so that the beds on the outside walls couldn’t fit in the budget. We could afford the window and do that labor, but the repair to the outside of the house would’ve blown the budget completely.
It’s not that we don’t listen to Alison’s advice, it’s the budget! We can’t have it both ways.
