Building Sliding Drawers Under the Stairs (Part 1)

Updated: Jan 17, 2023

The most challenging part of the hallway makeover was building something new. This project involved new tools and a different scope of work that had me majorly perplexed. The space under the stairs was quite deep, and due to the limited storage opportunities in the bathroom, (which is not getting renovated anytime soon), I wanted to make as much space usable as possible.

The first thing to do was to clear out the space. I found a brand-new fan, unboxed...from the 90s, plus other wares that I didn't really need. Left inside was a plywood shelf, held up with what seemed to be old scrap lumber. I cleared all of that out and assessed what next steps to take. Because I was adding drawers, I wanted to close off the space neatly, prime, and paint.

Once drywalled and painted, it was time to work on the box that would hold the drawers. Step 1: Build a box. Seems simple enough but no wall is ever completely straight, and no corner is a perfect 90 degrees. To make up for this, I measured everything a 1/4 inch smaller to ensure that once the box was built, it would still slide in under the steps. Any small 2gaps could be covered with trim.

Once built, the box was a perfect fit under the stairs with almost no room to spare.
