10 Cleaning Supplies you Need When You DIY

Since I've started my home renovation, I have had so many moments where I look back and say "I wish I did this instead of this." I like that feeling because it shows me I'm learning. That said, I have a running list of tips to give on all things home improvement that I'm constantly adding to. I'll continue to share and add to the blog as time goes on. So stay tuned!

The one guarantee in home improvement and DIY is that there will be a mess of some sort. No matter how small the project. As I've renovated room by room I've done my best to contain the mess in each space. I don't have it perfect, but each time I start a project, I prep and plan for keeping the space clean during and throughout. For me and my sanity, this helps me work better when a space is as tidy as possible. And then the clean up after the project needs to be as simple as well.

Check out below to see 10 Cleaning Supplies you need to help make your DIY project a bit more tidy.

So you probably have a regular vaccum, right? Keep that away from your diy project! Your regular house dirt is not suitable for DIY mess. You could break your vacuum or otherwise put it through undue stress. Also, shop vacs pick up particles and small items that aren't manageable for most household vacuums. Whether your project is big or small, wet or dry, there's a shop vac to fit.

My contractor introduced me to these filters and I've never looked back. When renovating or otherwise making excess dust in your home, it's recommended to change your filter more often for clean air. I've purchased two of these and I rotate them monthly. I'll never go back to the disposable one's!

Reusable Air Filter

This multi-purpose cleaner is great for just about everything and it has a fresh scent to match. It's biodegradable and is a cleaner and degreaser that can be diluted as little or as much as you need for different surfaces. I typically wipe down all surfaces before and after a project and use this to mop floors too.

Simple Green Concentrated Cleaner

The cloth that is strong enough to clean up messes but gentle enough not to scratch surfaces. The benefits of having these on hand are endless. Keep them around for any project and for cleaning around the house. Depending on the mess you can absolutely reuse these after tossing them in the washing machine.

Microfiber Cloths

Drop cloths are great for protecting surfaces and large areas that you cannot move easily or at all. Throw one down if you're painting and especially if you're making dust. You'll appreciate it when it's time to clean up.

Painter's tape goes along with the drop cloth because it can be used to keep the cloth in place. Especially if you're sealing off a room. Also, painters tape can be used as a template medium for planning a project like a build or even hanging pictures. It also can be used to make cleaner wood cuts with electric saws. This tape is strong but delicate enough not to damage most surfaces.

I'm on my second O Cedar mop and bucket since starting the renovation on my home. I have one bucket for demo work and another for everyday household cleaning. The ease of use with the spinning detail on the bucket is a game changer for cleaning. You can change the mop heads out as needed and even wash them too.

O-Cedar Spin Mop

Partnering this paper with tarp, and you've got an entire room of protection. I love that this paper is strong enough to hold up to small spills but can also be walked on alot while working. I typically tape this paper down on my wood floors to decrease the foot traffic on the floors for less clean up. This paper is a must for demolition work and would be great for painting furniture as well.

Builders Paper

This recommendation comes from experience! If there is a window in a room that you're working in, you'll have less dust and fumes if you set this fan up to create a reverse air situation. It's helps so much with keeping dust down and fumes out. It can get loud, but the return is worth it.

3-Speed Box Fan

9. Broom and Dust Pan

Just like the vacuum, you'll want a separate broom and dust pan for any demo work. These options are more heavy duty and the dust pail is big for larger objects. I still use mine and it's a must have when doing any projects at home.

Seems simple enough, right? I learned recently that a little bit of water on dust will help it clump up and create less dust as you sweep. Not only that, but a few drops of essential oils and you have a fresh scent as you clean. When you get done with your project you can do anything with the bottle. I like to keep a diluted bottle of white vinegar mixed with essential oils for small cleanups too.

Thank you! Me neither! Contractors are great for more than building sometimes.

I’m glad you got something from it! The filters were a game changer for me with having to switch them more often. Let me know what you think of both the filter and cleaner once you try it!
